Mulch Volcano: Bad! 👎

What is a "Mulch Volcano"?? 🌋
It is when mulch gets piled too high around the base of a tree. Over time, it causes the tree's trunk to grow higher, also developing a secondary root system in the mulch, growing higher, instead of deeper into the soil, which circles the tree, "choking" it at the base. This causes excess moisture trapped in the mulch/new root system which can cause the trunk to start rotting from the bottom up overtime. These roots can also become exposed, making the tree's health more vulnerable to fungal diseases, insects & rodents, reduces oxygen flow to roots which limits it's growth ability, etc.

How to properly mulch your trees & garden to get both a beautiful landscape, but also maintain the overall health of them? ⤵️
Only put down a thin layer of no more than 2-3 inches. Only layer it around the tree's base, not up against it's trunk. When putting down new mulch for the following season/year, make sure to replace it with the old stuff. Rake up as much of the older mulch as possible to get rid of any excessive moisture & build-up.
